The Christmas Meme

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?Oh, the Nog, all the way, or as Jeff and Beanie like to call it, Christmas Milk…. Cream, sugar, fresh nutmeg- always loved it.
  2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa doesn’t just wrap presents, he wraps EVERY SINGLE thing- even the teeny tiny stuff in the stockings. The Santa that visits our house does usually leave the one big super present unwrapped- like a bike or a wagon- but everything else? Wrapped to the nines, baby.
  3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?Since we got the Dr Seuss pop-up umbrella tree for the first time this year, it’s white lights on the tree, simply because it came that way- but usually I go for the colored. But they have to have the purple lights in there, or it just doesn’t look right. And I added the Bubbler lights that are full of mystery liquid and percolate away happily, and I’m happier. The house always gets colored lights, but we exercise restraint and usually just outline the eaves and windows. Very old school.
  4. Do you hang mistletoe? In California, we had a neighbor who would always bring over a big chunk of mistletoe he harvested from a great oak on his property- that I could dig. But now that I have kids, and would have to buy it at Fred Meyer in a little plastic sleeve- nah, not for me anymore.
  5. When do you put your decorations up? The day after Thanksgiving!! Doesn’t everyone? If I could do it Thanksgiving night, I would!
  6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? There are these little fried cookies my mom made when I was a girl. Light as air, made with batter and a star-shaped hot iron in oil, they came out little, crispy,  shells. Then, you would dip them in honey, and the were just about the best thing ever.
  7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child:One year, we all got new jammies, per normal, but mine were red flannel with a gathered, old-time sleeping cap, and I loved it. I can remember lying in bed Christmas eve, shivering with excitement, and watching the lights out the window from the top bunk. I didn’t think I would ever fall asleep; the anticipation is what I remember best of all.
  8. How and When did you learn the truth about Santa?Huh? Truth? What’re you talking about? Did something happen to Santa?
  9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Yes, usually new jammies, and that sucked as a kid, so I let my kids open two things. Jammies, and something else.
  10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? I throw open the boxes and let the kids go to town, then after they’re in bed, I move 1/2 the ornaments above the 4′ level.  We don’t have a theme- I’m not that disciplined- what if I find an ornament I like and it doesn’t match?? It freaks me out. Our tree is eclectic.
  11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?Hmmm. I love the way snow looks. I love the way snow sounds. I love the way it sparkles in the sunshine. I hate sledding. I hate making snowmen. I hate the way pretty snow turns to muddy water in my kitchen. Me, the queen of making up my mind: both.
  12. Can you ice skate? Yup, but no flying camels.
  13. Do you remember your favorite gift? Before we were married, my husband gave me a 1938 copy of Goethe’s Faust, illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. When I was a kid, it was definitely NOT the Gnip-Gnop game I got from Santa one year. Shattered my childhood, that game did.
  14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you? The feeling of closeness with my family. The time everyone carves out of their busy lives just to be together. My mom’s insane decorating practices, and how I might tease her about it, but I really love her spinning Disneyland Christmas tree.
  15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?I’ve always wanted to make a real Yule log, with the meringue mushrooms. So Martha, and I will probably never do it, but the fantasy remains. That, and someday making the honey crispy cookies my mom made when I was a kid.
  16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? I love Christmas eve. I love the quiet, peaceful, pregnant feeling of that night… even more than Christmas itself. I love the anticipation, the hush that falls on the house. The total peace. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, all is said, all is done. Sit and be still. Contemplate the cosmos. Or the spinning Christmas tree, if you’re in my family.
  17. What tops your tree? A Star, made from bent brass wire. Funky and rustic.
  18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving, hands down.
  19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? What Child is This?
  20. What is your favorite Christmas story? The little Golden Book about The Story of Christmas. I had it as a girl, and the illustrations captivated me. I always tried to draw the angels and baby Jesus the way they are in that book. Now I have it for my kids. Love it.

  1. I love Egg Nog! Don’t be surprised if you see me on the street clutching it in a brown paper bag and nursing it like it will make all of my problems go away. Straight or mixed or on the rocks!

  2. I didn’t realize you were quite so passionate about the ‘nog, Jared. Egg nog is one of my favorite parts of winter. Mmmm….

  3. Tracy, Jared, AND Heathen,
And I thought I KNEW you!! I’m sorry, I just can’t associate with anyone who likes that nog made of egg. Sorry, but a woman has to have principles!! 😉
