Public Enemy Number One

Okay, so get this: In Washington state, if you sit at home and do nothing, you get food stamps. But, if you go back to school full time to try and get a better job? They penalize you and remove some of your support. They are willing to continue benefits if you work 20 hours a week, while being a fulltime student. They will pay for daycare so you can work your minimum wage job that doesn’t cover the cost of daycare for three kids. That, folks, is the fruits of welfare reform. THIS is what it looks like to make the Evil Welfare Mother accountable. Awesome, isn’t it?

  1. That is crazy! I don’t understand why they would privilege people who stay home over students. And why would a 20 hours/wk job make it “okay” to be student? That makes no sense. There must be some rationale, but I just can’t figure it out.

  2. Ah, the welfare system. So brilliant. So eager to get people off. {eyeroll} What are you going to do? Do you still get enough help for you if you’re a full time student, or will you have to go part time?

  3. I don’t know yet. I have to take some paperwork down there next Monday. That should to be a riot. We’ll see. I’m sure as heck not quitting school.

They suck. Sit and do nothing and we’ll help, but so help you, if you try and improve your situation, you are damned.

  4. Those are some crazy incentives. Why not increase support for students? Seems like a great incentive to get people to go back to school–add tuition benefits, stuff like that.

But I guess nobody asked me 🙂

  5. That is crazy, I know here in Idaho once I had child support awarded in my divorce my food stamp amount went down a little, but that was it. I’m just a full time student (I don’t work) and it hasn’t affected what I get at all. Oh and when I asked about trying to get insurance through the state I was told I made $300 a month too much. But the girl did tell me that if I got pregnant I’d get coverage, that’s just what I need right now a baby!

  6. Oh the things I could say and the rants I could go on. But then I would be all full of the spirit of contention and THAT wouldn’t help anyone….. just know that I KNOW. And I occasionally get so irate I can hardly function. I’m SOO close to being done with it all, and not having to jump through ridiculous backwards hoops.

  7. How dare you fight the status quo and try to improve your life? Of course, you would be penalized for improving your education and your ability to provide for your children! And people wonder why we are trillions of dollars in debt and hated by most of the world! I say, let the mothers run the world and we would see a lot less war, poverty, and violence.
